GEORGE TOWN, 23 Aug — Penang’s traditional gold and jewellery industry must embrace new ideas while protecting the heritage and skills that make it unique, said state executive councillor Yb Jason H’ng.

YB Jason H’ng attended the Penang Goldsmith & Jewellers Association (PGJA) 28th anniversary gala dinner on behalf of Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow. The event also saw the official launch of the Penang Jewellery Fashion Week Magazine (PJFW Magazine).

He explained that the industry needs to adapt to changing markets and customer trends without losing the traditional skills passed down through generations.

"Traditional industries must keep innovating while protecting their heritage in a changing market," he said.

Yb Jason H’ng, the local government councillor, noted that the association made great progress last year by launching the first Penang Jewellery Fashion Week (PJFW). This event successfully brought gold and jewellery into the fashion world.

He added that this year's launch of the PJFW Magazine is another big step forward. It showcases Penang's talents in designing and making jewellery.

The magazine will give local jewellers a platform to highlight their creativity and expertise. It will also strengthen Penang's reputation in the global jewellery and fashion industries.

Yb Jason H’ng looks forward to seeing the PGJA continue to develop the state's gold and jewellery sector. He hopes more jewellery designed and made locally will gain recognition across the country and internationally under the "Made in Penang" brand.

"Penang is very good at designing and manufacturing jewellery. Initiatives like the PJFW and its magazine will help display these strengths on a much larger stage," he said.

He congratulated the PGJA on its 28th anniversary and the launch of the magazine. He described these efforts as positive steps to ensure the historic industry stays relevant and competitive.

The dinner brought together industry members, community leaders, and guests to celebrate the PGJA's 28 years of service to the trade.
